Jiennagoahti

Om Oss

Jiennagoahti (lyttegamme – listening “gamme”) – An artwork dedicated to listening in the Bergen Mountains is an art project initiated by artist Elin Már Øyen Vister in dialogue with Sami artist and architect Joar Nango. Together with Lydgalleriet and Bergen Sámiid Searvi (Bergen Sami Association), the artists have realised the project from idea to completion between 2021-2022.

Today Jiennagoahti is run by a working group/board including interdisciplinary artist Elin Már Øyen Vister (NO), artist/duojar Katarina Sážžá Káhtariinná/Katarina Dorothea Isaksen (rep.Bergen Sáamid Searvi) (NO/Sápmi), architect Trine Samuelsen Hansen (NO/Sápmi), interdisciplinary artist Morten Norbye Halvorsen with paternal roots in Kárášjohka Sápmi, and curator Peter Meanwell (UK/NO), from Lydgalleriet.

The artists’ idea and wish is for Jiennagoahti to be a unique space for listening to Sami sound art, experimental music, poetry, literature, and music. It will also be a place for contemplation and being together where cultural expressions can be experienced in proximity to nature. Nature is inextricably linked to Sami culture, and the location in the Bergen Mountains is a reminder of how nature’s intrinsic value is linked to cultural identity and history.

Therefore, Jiennagoahti will also be a place for stories and tales of journeys from Sápmi/Northern Norway to Bergen/Birgon and of the exchanges that have taken place for centuries between Bergen and Sápmi. An exchange of goods, but also of ideas, art, literature, music, and language that has shaped both places. Jiennagoahti is an art project with a multicultural perspective and a focus on the local ecology at Torrfjellet.

Jiennagoahti is built inspired by a traditional bealljegoahti (a round-shaped Sámi turf/wood hut)—with Sámihouse AS in Tana/Deatnu as the responsible contractor. It was set up on Torrfjellet by Ole Muosát and Dan Henrik Heiberg from Sámihouse, along with the artistic supervisor, producer, and volunteers, during May 2022. The soundworks in Jiennagoahti are conveyed through a specially built goáhti sound system that runs on solar power, custom-made by Norsk Radiofabrikk/Paal Rasmussen.

Jiennagoahti was re-turfed during two workshops in 2024 and 2025, facilitated and supported by Bergen School of Architecture in collaboration with Bergen Assembly.

Jiennagoahti – an artwork dedicated to listening in the Bergen Mountains—was granted permanent placement in 2026. Cecilie Andersson, professor at Bergen School of Architecture, has been of great assistance in facilitating the process together with Trine Samuelsen Hansen.

The project building face was generously supported by KORO – Art in Public Space – with the reasoning that the project “hopes to inspire new research and sharing of knowledge about Sápmi and Bergen”.

Jiennagoahti has been supported by Bergen City Council, Vestland County, Sámedigg/The Sámi Parliament and Arts Council of Norway.

Close collaborators in Bergen/Birgon include Bergen Sámiid Searvi (Bergen Sami Association,  BEK, Lydgalleriet, Bergen Assembly and Borealis festival.
